Edit and Add Asset Classes - Asset Inventory
Assets are organized by class in the class hierarchy tree. The top 6 classes (Area, Equipment, Linear, Misc, Structure, and Vehicle) are common across all client sites. Sub-classes are customizable per client. Learn how to add, edit, or delete classes. Also, learn how to change an asset's class.
Asset Class Overview
Asset classes in NEXGEN are separated into 6 different sections: Area, Equipment, Linear, Misc (Miscellaneous), Structure, and Vehicle. To create subclasses that fall into these 6 sections you must click on the class tab under the asset navigation tree.
Asset Class Descriptions and Examples
While asset class designations vary based on individual organization definitions, asset classes are usually defined as follows.
Area
- Asset classes under area are typically related to GIS assets.
- Can include parks, land areas, reservoirs.
- Equipment
- Asset classes under equipment include mechanical and electrical equipment.
- Can include pumps, HVAC, generators, instrumentation assets.
- Linear
- Asset classes under linear usually include GIS assets that are not as extensive in size as areas.
- Can include pumps, roads, trees, trashcans.
- Misc (or Miscellaneous)
- Asset classes under Misc are catch-all asset classes that do not fall into one of the other 5 classes.
- Can include furniture, IT equipment, and additional asset classes that you do not want in other main class sections.
- Structure
- Asset classes under structure usually represent physical buildings or larger constructions.
- Can include tanks, bridges, sheds, buildings.
- Vehicle
- Asset classes under vehicle usually represent fleet assets or assets tied to milage.
- Can include cars, tractors, trucks.
Adding a New Asset Class
There are two places where classes can be added in NEXGEN.
Add a New Class through Asset Inventory Module
- Navigate to the Asset Inventory Module. Click Assets > Asset Inventory.
- Click Class to view the class hierarchy tree.
- Right click on the class under which you would like to add a sub-class.
- Select + Add Class.
- You will be automatically redirected to the Asset Plan Module.
- Enter a class Name and Useful Life (years).
- Fill out any other desired fields: Account Number, Financial Life (years), Inflation Value (%), and Description.
- Click Save.
Add a New Class from the Asset Plan Module
Navigate to the Asset Plan Module. ClickAM Planning > Asset Plan.
Select a parent class from either the right-hand side of the screen or the class tree on the left side menu.
- Click the + New button in the upper left corner.
- Enter a class Name and Useful Life (years).
- Fill out any other desired fields: Account Number, Financial Life (years), Inflation Value (%), and Description.
- Click Save.
Note - sub-classes will take on the asset attributes that are associated with the parent class(es).
Edit an Asset Class
There are two ways to add an asset class in NEXGEN.
Edit an Asset Class from the Asset Inventory Module
Navigate to the Asset Inventory Module. ClickAssets > Asset Inventory.
Click Class to view the class hierarchy tree.
- Right click on the class under which you would like to add a sub-class.
- Select Edit Class.
- You will be automatically redirected to the Asset Plan Module.
- Click Edit on the class info zone.
- Edit desired fields.
- Click Save.
Edit an Asset Class from the Asset Plan Module
Navigate to the Asset Plan Module. Click AM Planning > Asset Plan.
Select a class from either the right hand side of the screen or the class tree on the left side menu.
- Click Edit on the class info zone.
- Edit desired fields.
- Click Save.
Delete an Asset Class
There are two ways to delete an asset class in NEXGEN.
Delete an Asset Class from the Asset Inventory Module
Navigate to the Asset Inventory Module. Click Assets > Asset Inventory.
Click Class to view the class hierarchy tree.
- Right click on the class under which you would like to add a sub-class.
- Select Edit Class.
- You will be automatically redirected to the Asset Plan Module.
- Select Delete in the upper right corner.
Delete an Asset Class from the Asset Plan Module
Navigate to the Asset Plan Module. Click AM Planning > Asset Plan.
Select a class from either the right-hand side of the screen or the class tree on the left side menu.
- Select Delete in the upper right corner.
Note: You will not be able to delete a class if it is a parent class. You must first delete all sub-classes sitting underneath the parent class before deleting the parent class.
Change an Asset's Class
There are two ways in which you can change an asset's class. Note that you will only be able to change an asset's class if the asset shares the same asset attributes as the new class and has the same parent class.
Change an Asset's Class by Dragging and Dropping on the Class Hierarchy Tree
Navigate to the Asset Inventory Module. Click Assets > Asset Inventory.
Click Class to view the class hierarchy tree.
- Select an asset from the class tree and drag and drop the asset to a new class.
Change an Asset's Class by Editing the Class Field on the Asset's Record
Open the desired asset record.
Click Edit on the top zone.
- Click the + button on the Class field.
- Click Save.
